Our Story

Thankful Swimwear is a slow-fashion swimwear brand that gives you high-quality swimwear with chic & comfortable coverage.

There are plenty of swimwear brands that offer styles to minimise your tan lines, or styles that give you maximum, modest coverage. We sit (or swim) in the middle. 

Our philosophy is to create beautiful swimwear with *just* enough coverage so you can feel more comfortable in your own skin, more comfortable to explore your surroundings, and more comfortable knowing that you’ve invested in a piece that will last you for many summers and swims to come. 

Inspired by the past & the future, our swimsuits give a nostalgic nod to the swimsuit styles of the 1940s and are revived in modern, recycled fabrics so you can enjoy an elegant, classic look with minimal impact on the environment. 

If you’re someone who feels more comfortable with a *little* more coverage at the beach or the pool, this is for you.

WHERE IT ALL BEGAN

It started with an idea

In January 2020, I was on holiday with my partner in Warrnambool, Victoria. Like many people with ambitious spirits in the new year, we whipped out a pen and piece of paper to write down our goals for the coming year. One of them included creating swim skirts. If I could create beautiful swimsuit pieces & help others feel more comfortable in their bodies, that seemed like something worth doing.

Making the swimsuits

In the midst of a global pandemic, I looked for a manufacturer who could help bring my designs to life. I looked both locally and offshore, and even tried making it with my mum (thank you, Mama)! Soon, we found out that we needed specific equipment & expertise to create the swim skirts at the standard we wanted. We eventually went with a small, woman-owned manufacturer in Bali who specialises in creating high quality swimwear. They pay their talented staff three times above the minimum wage, and create in small batches. A number of samples later, and our first collection is made!

Giving back

We named our brand Thankful Swimwear to remind ourselves that starting this business, having access to the resources to create these swimsuits, and being able to explore the places where our swimsuits take us, is a real privilege. We believe in helping others get access to the same opportunities and commit to donating $5 AUD of every swimwear piece to charities that address economic inequality, and take environmental action. For our first collection, donations will go to the Village Enterprise, a charity that's dedicated to ending extreme poverty in Africa through entrepreneurship & innovation.

OUR ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT

Considered creation

We know that producing anything will have an impact on our environment. Our philosophy is to reduce that impact as much as we can, and make quality timeless swimwear pieces that will be loved for a long time. All swimsuits are created using fabrics made from recycled ocean plastics and our packaging is kept to a minimum. Your swimsuits are placed in a complimentary reusable drawstring bag made with GOTS certified organic cotton and are sent to you in a compostable mailer bag.

We’re a small brand that embraces the slow fashion movement. We constantly question and reflect on our practices to see how we can improve the way we work with our makers, create our garments, minimise our impact on the environment and communicate with our customers.
